Juliet balconies are becoming increasingly popular in the UK. But what exactly are they and what benefits do they offer to homes and businesses?
A Juliet balcony, also known as a Balconet, Balconette, Juliette, or False Balcony, is a railing placed across a raised window or door opening to create a balcony effect.
Despite being named after the famous scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where Juliet appears at a window, these balconies were not in use until after Shakespeare’s death. However, they remain an appropriate name for this beautiful feature.
Juliet balconies enable homeowners to add a balcony-like feature to a property without requiring additional expense or planning permission. They add light, air, and the illusion of space to any upstairs room and can add value to both domestic and commercial/office properties.
They are incredibly easy to maintain, the glass panels require regular cleaning with warm water and a standard glass cleaner, while stainless steel elements can be cleaned simply with soap and water or a stainless steel cleaner.
As with any windows, we tend to recommend cleaning your glass and stainless steel at least once a month to prevent excess build-up of dirt, which could become tougher to remove with time.

Stainless Steel – A routine cleaning of light soiling, using soap, detergent or dilute (1%) ammonia solution in warm clean water will be sufficent. Apply with a clean sponge, soft cloth or soft fibre brush then rinse in clean water and dry.
Glass – routine cleaning with warm water and regular glass cleaner will prove beneficial. We advise monthly wipe downs to keep your balustrade sparkling.
